Obituary of Leo Francis Becker

Leo Francis Becker, 94, a lifelong resident of the Belvidere and Oxford area passed away peacefully at home on October 7, 2020 with his family by his side. Leo was born on August 11, 1926 at the family home in Belvidere to the late Anthony and Anna "Kappler" Becker. He graduated from Washington High School class of 1944. Leo served proudly in the US Navy during WWII, August 9, 1944-June 21, 1946. Leo served on NRS New York, NTS Sampson, ATB Fort Pierce, NTS Newport, RS Pascagoula, USS Hanover, RS NB Norva, RS Brooklyn, and PSC Lido Beach. Leo and his loving wife Mary "Lansche" Becker recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He was employed as a pipefitter for Hoffman-LaRoche in Belvidere, NJ. Earlier in his life he worked for Castle Creek Printing in Washington, NJ. Leo was a parishioner of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Belvidere, NJ. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus St. Joseph Council 5170 Fourth Degree, past Warren County American Legion Commander, past Commander of the American Legion Post 131, Charter Member of the American Legion Post 528, past American Legion Boys State Chair, Public Relations Chair, Scholarship Chair, Post 131 and 528 Color Guard, and past member of the Pohatcong Memorial VFW Post 6701 in Washington, NJ. Leo assisted to rebuild Post 131 in Belvidere. He received the honor of Warren County of American Legion Legionnaire of the Year and the NJ State Legionnaire of the Year. Leo was a member of the Hackettstown Senior Hall of Fame and a member of the Chapel of the Four Chaplains. Leo was a founding member of the Warren County War Memorial. He was the Warren County Veterans Interment Supervisor and the caretaker for the St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery. Leo was a past member of the Oxford Volunteer Fire Company. Leo enjoyed hunting, tending to his vegetable garden and fishing with his grandchildren. In addition to his wife Mary, Leo is survived by a daughter, Mary E. Hengst; a son, Michael F. Becker; sisters, Joan Frisbie and her husband Jack and Pauline Kimble; sister in-law Katherine Becker; granddaughters, Mary L. Carley and her husband Chris and Amanda E. Hengst and her finance Brandon Sciancalepore, along with many loving nieces and nephews. Leo was preceded in death by his brothers, Vincent, Martin and Leonard; sisters, Mary Nodes and Sr. Patricia Becker C.S.J.
