Obituary of Robert Leroy Detrick

Robert (Bob) Detrick, 94, of Washington, NJ entered eternity on January 14, 2021. He was born in Stroudsburg, PA on February 16, 1926 to Leroy Detrick and Meredith (Overfield) Detrick. He lived in the Washington/Warren County area for over eighty years. He is survived by three children and four stepchildren and their spouses; Linda Robertson of Washington, NJ, David Detrick (wife Donna) of Washington, NJ, Alison Whedon (husband Royd) of St. Petersburg, FL, Priscilla Szlachtianchyn (husband Tom) of Georgetown, DE, Martha Ross of Roanoke, VA, Peter Ross of Roanoke, VA and Andrew Ross (wife MaryKate) of Boonsboro, MD. He is also survived by his nephew Doug Detrick of St. Augustine, FL. (Bob referred to his nephew as Florida Doug as opposed to his grandson he referred to as Virginia Doug.) Additionally, Bob is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren all of which he treasured. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Arlene Ross Detrick, his brother, Bill and his son, Dean. Bob graduated from Washington High School in 1942. He was proud to have started a four generation family tradition of wrestlers. After high school he served in the Navy on an LST delivering men, equipment and supplies to the beaches during battles in both Europe and islands in the Pacific. After returning from the service Bob started a family and attended Churchmen's Business School. He did accounting for various local businesses and prepared tax returns for people for many years. He also served at the Treasurer of Washington Township. Finally, he retired after serving as the Business Manager for the Washington Township School District for many years. Bob was involved in many community activities including; helping to establish the Washington Township Youth Association and the Central Warren Youth Association, served as a longtime coach for youth baseball and wrestling and was a member and longtime Treasurer of The Chapel at Warren Valley. He was honored to be asked to serve as the Grand Marshall in one of the Washington Celebrates America 4th of July parades. Bob enjoyed traveling. He and his wife Arlene visited all 50 states and traveled to many reunions with his Navy shipmates. He loved sports, the Phillies and family picnics. One of his favorite adventures was his participation in a four generation skydive with his son, grandson and great-grandson at the age of 88. Bob spent the past eight years as part of the assisted living community at Chelsea at Brookfield, Belvidere, NJ. Bob's family would like to thank everyone who knew him and helped him live a good life and to those who helped lead him to an even better eternity. Internment arrangements are being handled by the Warren Hills Memorial Home and services will be private.
