Obituary of "Rik" Walter Higbee Atkinson III

Rik (Walter H.) Atkinson III was born in Somers Point, New Jersey, on August 8, 1949, to Walter (Bud) H. Atkinson II and Joan (Sailor) Atkinson. He grew up in Pleasantville, NJ, and graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1967. He later attended Bowling Green State University, graduating in 1971, and served in the New Jersey National Guard until 1977.

In 1972, Rik met the love of his life, Penelope (Penny Jayne) Atkinson, in Ocean City, NJ, at Tony Marts. They were married in 1975 and shared 49 wonderful years together. Rik is survived by his wife Penny and their three children: Rebecca (Gregg) Forsbrey, Derrik (Melissa) Atkinson, and Melanie (Erik) Abel. He was a beloved "Grand-Rik" to his grandchildren Erik and Leo Forsbrey, Jack and Eviana Atkinson, and Emma Abel.

Rik was an elder and deacon for many years at the Washington First Presbyterian Church, where he faithfully served his community.

He spent his career supervising various chemical operations in Belvidere and Nutley, NJ, and retired from Roche in 2000 after 27 years of service. From 2001 to 2024, Rik worked as a Compliance and Manufacturing Facilitator throughout the United States, known for his tireless work ethic and dedication, continuing to work until the very end.

Rik was an outdoors enthusiast, often seen working on the family's 10 acres of land in Karrsville, NJ. His days were filled with trips to QuickChek and running errands to help family, friends, and neighbors. He loved the beach and spent his time searching for the perfect waves to ride. His ideal day included time at the Jersey Shore, listening to the Rolling Stones, celebrating a Phillies/Eagles win, enjoying a White House Sub, and ending the night at the casino.

Those who knew Rik would describe him as selfless, caring, kind, and easy-going. He was always ready to lend a hand and would drop everything for those he loved. His kindness and generosity touched many lives, and he will continue to be an inspiration to all.

Rik was eternally grateful for the love, guidance, compassion, and joy provided by his wife, children, family, friends, co-workers, schoolmates, and neighbors throughout the years.

His memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Family and friends may pay their respects from 2:00 - 3:00 PM on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at the First Presbyterian Church of Washington. 40 East Church Street, Washington, NJ 07882. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00 PM.
