Obituary of Dorothy Poliotti

Dorothy Ella Bashaw Poliotti, died peacefully on Wednesday, November 21, 2007. Born: On November 16 in 1914 in Brattleboro, Vermont, Dorothy was one of four daughters born to Ella and Corliss Bashaw. Personal: Her early years were spent in Washington, New Jersey. After her marriage to John R. Poliotti in 1938, they moved to Ridgewood, New Jersey where they lived for over fifty years. She was active in her church and her community. In 1969, after being a homemaker and raising her daughters, she went to work for Dr. Raymond Banta at Valley Hospital as a secretary for the rehabilitation program which was created to help troubled young people. She worked at Valley Hospital until 1984. In December of 1999, Dorothy and her husband, John moved to Leisure Village West in Manchester, New Jersey where she joined the Pinelands Reformed Church. In June of 2007, she moved with her husband to Winston Salem, North Carolina. She and John were days away from celebrating their 69th wedding anniversary. Survivors: Dorothy is survived by her devoted husband, John R. Poliotti; her two daughters, Jane Dorothy Pento and her husband Paul of Winston Salem and Susan Colby Pellegrino and husband Rocco S. Pellegrino of Walden, New York; five grandchildren, Alexander G.F. Pento of Winston Salem, Karen L. Freeman of Brick, NJ, Paul D. Pento of Chatham, NJ, Kevin M. Pento of Brielle, NJ and Kristopher T. Pento of Tampa, Fla.; five great-granddaughters, and her three sisters, Evelyn Van Horne of Bethlehem, Pa, Margaret Moyer of Stroudsburg, Pa and Betty Cochran of Charlotte, NC. She will be deeply missed by all her family and friends. Services: A memorial service for family and friends in Winston Salem, North Carolina will be held on Wednesday (today) at 5 p.m. at the Augsburg Lutheran Church, 845 West Fifth Street. A memorial service for family and friends will also be held in Washington, New Jersey at the United Methodist Church on Saturday at 12 p.m. Following the service, burial will be held at the Port Murray Cemetery. Memorials: The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the exceptional doctors and nurses at the Forsyth Medical Center ICU3 for their care and kindness. Dorothy was a wonderful writer. In high school, she was a columnist for her school paper. Through the years she wrote to everyone in the family and her many friends, never forgetting a birthday or an anniversary. She wrote beautiful letters and poems with humor and often giving a life lesson. To remember Dorothy, the family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Dorothy Ella Poliotti Journalistic Scholarship Fund, in care of Jane Pento, 1417 Ridgemere Lane, Winston Salem, NC 27106. The scholarship will be given at the Warren Hills Regional High School in Washington, NJ.
