Obituary of Floyd G Opdyke

Floyd G. Opdyke, 92 of Califon, NJ passed away peacefully on December 6, 2016 in his home with his loving family by his side. He was born on March 25, 1924 in Oxford, NJ to the late Beatrice and Floyd Opdyke Sr. Floyd lived the majority of his life in Washington, NJ. He was a graduate of Washington High School Class of 1942 where he was a standout athlete. Floyd excelled at football, basketball, and baseball. He loved Washington High School and attended all the class reunions for as long as he was able. Upon graduation, he was drafted and proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII. Floyd served as a Tech 4 Sergeant with the 69th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop. During his tour of duty he bravely fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He specialized as a Radio Operator during this time and was awarded several medals including the American Campaign Medal and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. His love for his country was evident his entire life. He attended the majority of the 69th Reconnaissance Troop yearly reunions across the country he loved so much. Floyd was the owner and founder of Opdyke Sales and Service in Washington, NJ. He was a very accomplished mechanic and was an early expert in repairing auto transmissions during a time when the automatic transmission became the new feature in automobiles. This is something he was most proud of, rightfully so. Floyd was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Washington Rotary Club, the International Truck Dealers Association, and the American Legion in Whitehouse, NJ. His love for sports continued throughout his life. He was a skilled golfer and a member of the Harkers Hollow Golf Club. Floyd was of the Catholic faith and a parishioner of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Califon. Above all of his many passions, Floyd will be most remembered for his love for his family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with them and will be sadly missed by all. He is survived by his loving devoted wife of 23 years, Evelyn, his loving children, a son, Bob Opdyke and his wife Jan, and a daughter, Linda Milson and her husband Jim, caring in-laws, many nieces and nephews, and his close faithful friends. He is preceded in death by his first wife of over 40 years, Irene, his beloved son, Mark, and his sisters, Doris and Dorothy. Friends and family may pay their respects on Sunday, December 11, 2016 from 3-7 PM at the Warren Hills Memorial Home, 234 W. Washington Ave., Washington, NJ 07882. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 12, 2016 at 10:00 AM at the St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 398 County Rte 513, Califon, NJ 07830. Burial will immediately follow at the St. Joseph Parish Cemetery in Washington, NJ In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Floyd's name to the St. John Neumann Catholic Church.
